Welcome to the Best School in Newark
Event Date: May 17,2014
As a result of several days of inclement weather this year, we will be extending the 3rd marking period by 1 week, the marking period will now end on 4/11/14. The dates of Friday 4/4 and Friday 4/11/14, which were originally scheduled as early dismissal days, will now be a full days of school with dismissal at 3:30 pm. This will provide the teachers and students additional time for instruction, and completion of class assignments.
Report card conference have been rescheduled to 4/17/14. There will be 11:30am dismissal for all students, and report card conferences will occur from the hours of 12:00pm to 4:00pm. There will be no school on Friday 4/18/14.
Please do not hesitate to contact the school with any questions.
From the Desk of the Director
This year has been very busy at GNCS. Just to give you an idea, here are a few highlights of the past 12 months: we have completely revised and aligned our curriculum to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS); an aggressive academic plan has been developed to improve student performance; teachers have increased the instructional rigor in the classroom, which challenges our students and better prepares them for high school, college and careers; almost 95% of our graduated 8th graders attended schools other than their neighborhood high schools; we opened and filled the first classes at our Elementary School; the first phase of renovations have been completed at our Middle School; our PTO has grown and become even more active. All of our parents, students and staff are diligently working to meet the goal of being the "Best School in the City of Newark".
Although so much has been done, there is still a great deal yet to be done. We are looking forward to filling both our kindergarten and fifth grade classes for the 2014- 2015 school year. We will be adding several staff positions, increasing the amount of quality professional development for teachers and will continue to revise the curriculum, as needed. Additionally, plans for the second phase of renovations at the Middle School are in motion, as well as plans to begin our educational foundation, whose primary focus will be to provide financial and other types of assistance to our students as they attend the high schools of their choice.
We have added a resource tab for parents, which is located under the parents' page of this website. The Resource page provides information about Common Core State Standards and frequently asked questions about CCSS. The page also provides materials and helpful links that will assist parents in preparing their children for the NJASK. Lastly, I would like to remind some and inform others that GNCS no longer utilizes a school application process or holds a school lottery for vacant seats. Enrollment for our school is now being handled by the One Newark Universal Enrollment System. You can find the link and appropriate information on this website. Please remember that if you are interested in sending your child to GNCS, you should rank us as your number one choice on the application. If you have any questions or difficulty with the application, you can contact Ms. Paniagua, our Parent Liaison at 973-242-3543, ext. 202.
Thank you for visiting,
Christopher T. Pringle, School Director
Testimonial from Mr. Ramos, GNCS Social Studies Teacher
A professor once told me that a teacher makes over 1,000 decisions every day. I have found that to be completely true in my tenure here at Greater Newark Charter School.
